Cuisine and Empire: Cooking in World History (California Studies in Food and Culture)

Cuisine and Empire: Cooking in World History (California Studies in Food and Culture)

Rachel Laudan tells the remarkable story of the rise and fall of the world’s great cuisines—from the mastery of grain cooking some twenty thousand years ago, to the present—in this superbly researched book. Probing beneath the apparent confusion of dozens of cuisines to reveal the underlying simplicity of the culinary family tree, she shows how periodic seismic shifts in “culinary philosophy”—beliefs about health, the economy, politics, society and the gods—prompted the construction o

Trump: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. Now What?

DENIAL

By now most of you have passed the first two to three stages of grief. Well done. It’s been difficult, I know. But you’re likely still in a bit of shock because you just can’t wrap your head around why people who make far less than $ 250,000/year, or who aren’t necessarily bigots, would still vote for someone as reckless and unstable (and historically unqualified) as Trump. Even Trump, himself, I believe, was stunned when he heard the news that he had become president-elect. To Trump, it was no more than a ploy-based popularity contest in which, by all tides seemingly against him, he won. Nevertheless, he is now king. Go ahead and continue counting the popular votes among the quarter-plus of the country who voted for Clinton, but to what avail, when the imperfect Electoral College is still an integral factor (why?), and when ~49 percent of eligible voters didn’t vote at all?

Never mind the work ahead for Trump, which cannot possibly be fully delegated away, as much as Trump seems to want it to be. Even W., despite his record-setting vacation days, and his obsequious deferral to Cheney et al. to govern, still had to make the rounds, and they weren’t exactly a walk in the park (it comes, after all, with the crown). Just wait until Trump comprehends what’s ahead of him. The bloviating nonsense from his Twitter account at 3AM while sagging on his golden toilet will be the easy part. Negotiating trade with China, supplying arms to Israel (and its adversaries), caviling with Russia, and hemming and hawing with the Republican-led House and Senate, will be the least of his ever-growing concerns — or, rather, of Pence’s ever-growing concerns.

ANGER

So how did we get here? Everyone has an opinion. Trump, while a lunatic billionaire (I’ll believe the billionaire status when I see it, which will never be revealed, until or unless Anonymous steps up = please step up, Anonymous), catered to the middle class and inflamed their understandably populist disposition. Of course Trump stands for everything antipodal to populism, but he nevertheless ran on it and prevailed. Clinton sorta ran on it, post-Sanders, but, meh, not really. Clinton, a technocratic career politician who, while impressively credentialed, but who had no salient platform to run on — least of all a catchy slogan to repeat ad nauseam — lost to a well-known conman and reality TV star who had, quite literally, nothing to offer.

BARGAINING

We mustn’t forget that eight years ago Clinton lost to a black junior senator with a Muslim-sounding name. Thus, after four years as Secretary of State — the position’s particulars of which are near impossible to elucidate and translate to the average American — and after another four years as a grandmother, Clinton was nevertheless coronated by the DNC. Which was a bad move, of course. It would have been less bad had Clinton embraced more forcefully Sanders’s rhetoric and had chosen a running-mate like Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, but instead she chose Tim Kaine. I personally believe that’s when many of Sanders’s supporters, including Millennials and the already disillusioned working class, folded. A running-mate is no panacea, and certainly not a promise of change, per se; but a nice, straight, older, white guy, who speaks Spanish relatively fluently (wow), augured to many people that Clinton would politick in much the same way that her husband and Obama had, even if Obama did so in a slightly more progressive, Gen-X-y way. And that, along with the shenanigans of the DNC under Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was Clinton’s undoing. You can blame the right-wing hysteria around Benghazi, the email server, the media, Comey, Russia, misogyny, the decades-long Republican witch hunt for Clinton, but it was Clinton’s implicit guarantee of the status quo that did her in. What was her once-failed campaign thinking? They were thinking about themselves, obviously.

DEPRESSION

Now some of you might be saying to yourselves, the status quo wasn’t so bad. Obama is perhaps the most consequential president in contemporary U.S. history, and one of the most effective presidents ever, which I full-heartedly believe to be true. But while the markets rose, and while the tech and finance and real estate sectors soared, and while corrupt career politicians (like Clinton, whether real or perceived) pow-wowed with the “coastal elites,” everyday Americans felt not only disenfranchised but also disparaged. Quite simply, they had had enough. Imagine that? They would have rather voted for change with nothing at all to substantiate it, than for politics as usual. And that’s precisely what they did (alas, the ones who voted).

Yes, they did so at the expense and safety of all marginalized, demonized, and suffering minorities, but they didn’t care (enough) about them. This doesn’t make all ~55 million of them bigots. You can (and should) debate the cognitive dissonance that accompanied their votes, but until you realize that their votes were about them first, you will only continue to bang your head against the wall in your safe spaces (were they ever?), amidst your microaggressions (which, at most, are just that — micro), and between your 50 shades of privilege (because people in general are just dying to be told how ignorant they are).

ACCEPTANCE

Why do I speak so confidently, so resolutely about this? Because, while by all accounts I personify the so-called coastal elite — as a white male who is highly educated and well-paid by corporations in New York City and in the Bay Area — I come from an “uneducated,” working-class background in Pennsylvania. I’m aware of the struggles that working class whites endure. I’m also aware of their misconceptions. And their foibles. Further, as a member of the LGBTQ community, I also know what it feels like to be treated as less than, as an abomination, as a scourge. I don’t know what it feels like to be a woman, or a Jew, or an immigrant, or a person of color in this country, but I do carry some street cred (if you want to challenge it at this point in time, then you might be part of the current problem). Also, despite the recent rise in Trump-inspired hate crimes and in the shameless (yet ineffectively shamed) rhetoric of various hate groups, the outspoken bigots really only represent a slice of the Trump voting block (how much of the slice remains to be calculated). This is my unsuccessful way of trying to allay our fears.

NOW WHAT?

So what do we do now? This is tricky because Trump and his ilk are bonkers, and because the Republicans are set to run the House and the Senate again. The first time they ran all three, the Great Depression unfurled. The second time, the Iraq War burst out of thin air. And the last two times abetted the recession that Obama battled and eventually beat, no thanks to Congress. To be honest, I’m not entirely optimistic today. I believe at this point in time that one of four things could happen:

• Assuming Trump is not convicted of one of his countless impeachable offenses, the Trump presidency will either be a relative success or a relative non-success. Only if a veritable superhero emerges might disenchanted voters feel compelled to test him or her out in 2020, in which case Trump could be ousted. If we’re at war, however, then the superhero will have a much harder time. Trump, to his chagrin, will either have to run again, or, worse, he will defer to Pence to run as president.
• An inevitable recession will hit in spite of Trump’s policies — good, bad, or horrendous — during which the average American must suffer enough to vote in 2020 for whoever isn’t Trump or Pence. What exactly does “suffer enough” entail? Unprecedented joblessness? Undrinkable water? Online porn that isn’t free?
• Each marginalized minority group might finally learn to desist with the in-fighting and temper the identity politics in order to rally around commonalities and interests shared with other marginalized minority groups; and to then communicate and ally with the white working class in order to bring them back to the Democratic platform, provided the Democratic platform demonstrates a concerted effort to deliver on promises that aren’t tainted by corporations, special-interest groups, lobbyists, and career politicians with unimpressive records. It’s a long shot, I know.
• An even longer shot, but not an entirely dubious one, is the possibility that either one or both of the major parties begin to experience seismic shifts, perhaps culminating in a splintering off into new parties with which to be legitimately reckoned. Could true progressives, disappointed by their acquiescence to the DNC’s 2016 platform, organize themselves quickly enough to rock the boat beyond a Bernie Revolution (taking many independents along with them)? Or could the so-called Alt Right (read: Neo-Nazis), emboldened by the lack of outrage in response to their hateful rhetoric, do the same (taking hypocritical Evangelicals and Tea Partiers along with them)? In a country of ~320 million people, we’re long overdue for multiparty governance that extends beyond Republican and Democrat. How two parties can continue to represent such a large and diverse population with no need to compromise short of shutting down the government (twice) continues to elude me. In other words, maybe real change is yet to come?

Obviously I’m no fortune teller. What are your thoughts? What do you think could happen? What do you think should happen?

Millennials Are Loading Up On Their Vegetables

It’s no secret that most Americans do a pretty lousy job when it comes to following mom’s advice to eat their vegetables.

In fact, according to estimates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 10 percent of Americans eat the recommended amount of two to three cups of vegetables per day. That means many of us aren’t getting enough of key nutrients, like potassium and dietary fiber, and vitamins that keep us healthy.

But that statistic appears likely to change in the near future, according to a new analysis released this month by the NPD Group, a market research firm.

According to the firm’s research, consumers under the age of 40 are eating 52 percent more fresh vegetables and 59 percent more frozen vegetables than they were a decade ago. Conversely, the boomer generation — aged 60 and up — is eating 30 percent less fresh vegetables, as well as 4 percent less frozen vegetables, over the same time frame.

David Portalatin, vice president and food consumption industry analyst at NPD, said the data is a sign that younger generations of eaters are “turning back the clock” when it comes to the food they eat.

Millennials, he said, appear to prefer food that is fresh and often local or in season instead of the fast food and packaged convenience foods that began to proliferate at the time their parents’ generation — today’s boomers — were themselves thirty-somethings.

“The younger generation is taking a different look at these things,” Portalatin told The Huffington Post. “What’s old is new again.”

type=type=RelatedArticlesblockTitle=Related… + articlesList=56152560e4b021e856d2ed58,56cf69aae4b03260bf7610fe,56b4b6fbe4b08069c7a6df3e,560acca1e4b0dd85030959b4

The analysis is based off data from the firm’s National Eating Trends food and beverage tracker, which aggregates data from a nationally representative group of panelists who self-report everything they eat and drink using a web-based journal. The latest findings from the tracker were recently published in the firm’s Eating Patterns in America industry report.

And even though the data depends on self-reported consumption patterns, which aren’t always the most reliable, Portalatin believes these numbers are no fluke.

Over the firm’s 30 years of tracking eating patterns, Portalatin explained, vegetable consumption has increased with age, and he sees no reason that will change with the cauliflower-obsessed millennial crowd. The firm is forecasting that fresh vegetable consumption will increase another 10 percent overall over the next several years.

Even if that forecast holds, Americans have a ways to go toward improving their diets.

Portalatin pointed out that we’re still eating far fewer vegetables overall than we were 25 years ago, and these less-healthy eating patterns are often established from a young age. Currently, for example, the vegetable that U.S. toddlers are most likely to eat is a french fry.

But at least it’s a start.

Trevor Noah: ‘It Seems Extremely Easy To Get Shot By Police In America.’

Trevor Noah wasn’t in a laughing mood on Wednesday night’s “Daily Show.”

The reason: Friday’s shooting of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man killed by a white female police officer in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The shooting, one of three police killings of African Americans in the last week, made Noah, a native of South Africa, realize something about this country.

“It seems extremely easy to get shot by police in America,” he said. “Which is not right.”

Noah also noticed two things commonly happen after these types of shootings.

“When a white officer shoots a black person, the first accusation is racism,” he said. “The police officer’s first defense is, ‘But what about all the black people I haven’t shot?’”

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

23 New ‘Geniuses’ Pushing The Boundaries Of Art And Science Today

From a 44-year-old microbiologist to a 32-year-old long-form journalist to a 67-year-old jewelry maker, the 2016 class of MacArthur Fellows is a diverse selection of the sharpest minds in America today.

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced the recipients of its annual MacArthur Fellowship ― commonly referred to as the “Genius Grant” ― early Thursday morning. Dianne Newman, Sarah Stillman and Joyce J. Scott are just three of those recipients, earning themselves a $ 625,000 stipend and a spot in the history books next to previous fellows like writer Susan Sontag, astrophysicist Joseph Taylor, and artist Carrie Mae Weems.

The MacArthur Fellowship dates back to 1981, created to acknowledge and celebrate high-achieving individuals in disciplines as diverse as sculpture, chemistry, human rights law and engineering. What was once a $ 50,000 award has since grown into a six-figure prize, awarded to American citizens and residents with a “no strings attacked” policy to enable them to pursue new creative work.

This year, the fellows include 12 women and 11 men, ranging in age from the 31 to 67. Together, the group of artists, scientists, writers, lawyers, engineers and activists are nothing short of inspirational. See the entire list of new “geniuses” below:

No Prison For Colorado Student Who Raped ‘Helpless’ Freshman

Austin Wilkerson told friends of a fellow University of Colorado-Boulder student who drank too much at a party that he’d take care of her. Instead, he raped her as she drifted out of consciousness and lied about what he had done.

Wilkerson, 22, convicted of sexual assault of a helpless victim and unlawful sexual contact, faced a possible prison sentence of four years to life for the March 2014 attack on the freshman woman. But a judge in Boulder, Colorado, on Wednesday sentenced him to two years on work release and 20 years’ probation.

“I’ve struggled, to be quite frank, with the idea of, ‘Do I put him in prison?’” said Judge Patrick Butler, according to the Daily Camera newspaper. “I don’t know that there is any great result for anybody. Mr. Wilkerson deserves to be punished, but I think we all need to find out whether he truly can or cannot be rehabilitated.”

The lenient punishment, reminiscent of the six-month sentence given to Stanford University athlete Brock Turner in June for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, adds to the perception that the criminal justice system too often fails to consider the trauma and lifelong effects experienced by rape victims, said Brie Franklin, executive director of the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

“We are disappointed to see, yet again, that the impact on the perpetrator, who chose to commit a crime against another person, is being considered over the impact on the victim, who did not have a choice in the matter,” Franklin told The Huffington Post.

Turner’s light sentence helped propel national outrage against the judge who imposed the punishment and its message of making excuses for serious criminal assault.

Supporters of Wilkerson, as in the California case of Turner, appealed for leniency. Wilkerson’s friends and family said the crime was a “traumatic incident” for him. They asked the judge to consider Wilkerson’s future, and said he “will go far in this world if not defined by this one incident.”

Wilkerson’s victim drank too much celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, and Wilkerson told her friends he’d take care of her. Instead, he “isolated and raped the half-conscious victim,” prosecutors said in court documents.

Wilkerson admitted to investigators he’d made advances to the victim that night, “but that she rebuffed him each time, and that he felt ‘pissed off’ and called her a ‘fucking bitch,’” according to court documents.

Wilkerson told the jury that the woman wasn’t inebriated and that their sexual activity was consensual. His defense argued that the victim filed a rape claim to cover up for a drop in her grades.

Following his conviction in May, probation officers recommended a sentence with no prison time, arguing Wilkerson was remorseful. Prosecutors fiercely disagreed, writing in a pre-sentencing memo that Wilkerson’s changing story was evidence he hadn’t seriously accepted his guilt.

District Attorney Stanley Garrett pointed to harm to the victim in a memo to the court, arguing “it is objectively offensive to consider as ‘punishment enough’ the fact that the defendant will have to pursue a career as a biochemist instead of as a medical doctor.”

“If more than a quarter of people in this community were killed by a drunk driver, or assaulted or menaced during an invasion of their home, the community would call for a stronger message than a sentence of probation with no punitive sanction to effectuate respect for the law, the deterrence of crime, and the protection of the public,” Garnett wrote. “Sexual assault should be no different. Murderers go to prison. Armed robbers go to prison. Rapists go to prison. This is what justice requires.”

Why Do Teens Cut and What Can Parents Do To Help?

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Michael R. Hollander, PhD

2016-08-11-1470883706-9834237-HollanderHeadshot198Oct1115.jpgApproximately 14 to 18 percent of high school students and between 12 to 35 percent of college students in the United States engage in some form of self-injurious behavior at least once. The age of onset often occurs in early adolescence, between the ages of 11 and 14.

While self-harm is of serious concern for parents, families, and teachers, it’s important to know that when the right approach and treatment is provided in a timely manner, this behavior is highly treatable. But kids who self-harm need treatment right away. Giving in to pleas for more time and delaying treatment can lead to further, more serious injury. While we often hear about the number of teens who engage in this behavior, the majority who are treated appropriately can go on to lead happy, healthy lives.

Is an act of self-harm a form of suicide? Can it lead to suicide?

This type of self-harm is known as non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which by definition is the deliberate, intentional damage to one’s body tissue without the intention of dying. There is no intention of suicide, however, there can be a high correlation with suicide if self-injurious behavior goes untreated.

Why do adolescents cut or engage in other self-harm activities?

It’s most often a way of trying to manage emotions. For example, when teens cut themselves, they will usually experience a sense of calmness. It also appears that the vast majority of teens who self-injure are those who have a high degree of self-criticalness and self-loathing. Self-injury helps them to contain their emotions. Or conversely, if they feel numb and empty, they use self-injury to feel something.

A small percentage of teens use self-injury for avoidance or to create a distraction. An even smaller percentage use it to get attention. And for a very small group of kids, they use it to punish themselves because they feel they don’t deserve to live, breathe, or take up space. They may cut themselves in the context of an extreme emotional situation.

This is a group of highly-emotional and sensitive adolescents who frequently feel things more intensely than their peers, but that doesn’t necessarily distinguish who would engage in self-injury. This type of behavior is about not having the skill set to modulate emotions in conjunction with a high degree of self-criticalness. There are other factors that can come into play as well, such as co-occurring mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance use, and/or a history of trauma.

What are the most effective ways to respond to an incident of self-harm behavior?

When consulting with parents or speaking to community groups, these are the main points I make:

  • It’s important to not overreact. Try to assume a matter of fact approach, without judgment. Try to stay open minded and validate the teen’s emotions. Validation is key to keeping an open dialogue.
  • Get an assessment of whether or not the behavior is self-injurious in order to manage one’s feelings or if the intention is to commit suicide.
  • Assuming the behavior is non-suicidal, I suggest that parents start with their primary care doctor to help find a therapist who is highly trained and has a track record of treating adolescents with self-injurious behavior.
  • Elements of successful treatment for self-injury include individual therapy with a skills component such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which is a type of cognitive therapy that helps one increase emotional and cognitive regulation by improving coping skills. It’s also important to include family skills training and family therapy.

Michael R. Hollander, PhD, is the director of training and a senior consultant for 3East, McLean Hospital’s DBT treatment program for adolescents, and an assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychiatry, part-time, at Harvard Medical School. A nationally recognized expert on the causation and treatment of self-injury, he has been treating adolescents and their families for over 40 years and lectures throughout the United States on this subject. His book, Helping Teens Who Cut: Understanding and Ending Self-Injury, was published in 2008. Additional information on self-harm can be found in the webinar “Assessing and Treating Self-Injury”, led by Dr. Hollander as part of McLean’s Borderline Personality Disorder Patient and Family Education Initiative.

New Documents Reveal Oil And Tobacco Industries’ Dirty History Of Working Together

Things keep looking worse and worse for the oil industry.

After documents dating back as far as the 1940s revealed companies coordinated to cover up the industry’s role in climate change, several corporations, including ExxonMobil, now face a fraud probe and mounting public outrage. Many have said the climate change cover-up rivals that of big tobacco’s decades-long scheme to mislead the public about the health risks of smoking ― assertions the oil industry continues to shrug off

But a new trove of documents compiled and released Wednesday by the Washington-based Center for International Environmental Law, or CIEL, provides further evidence that the comparison to big tobacco is valid and that the two industries have even worked collaboratively for over a half-century.

The documents, according to Carroll Muffett, president of CIEL, show oil and tobacco giants have long shared marketing and advertising strategies, research institutes, PR firms and even scientists.

And contrary to popular belief, Muffett told The Huffington Post, “tobacco companies got their playbook from the oil industry,” not the other way around.

In April, CIEL released documents showing that the oil industry has known about the potential role of fossil fuels in CO2 emissions since at least 1957. They began “shaping science to shape public opinion,” as Muffett put it, even earlier, in the 1940s.

A second round of documents released in May revealed that the industry had the technology to cut CO2 emissions in the 1970s, but instead chose to “invest in research to explain away the climate risks.”

The latest batch, which includes dozens of documents pulled from an archive of some 14 million tobacco industry documents maintained by the University of California at San Francisco, shows that big oil’s strategies “were effective enough that another industry ― the global poster child for consumer fraud ― took these strategies to carry out its own deception campaign,” according to Muffett.

The cross-pollination was easy to come by.

In June 1957, representatives of tobacco powerhouse Philip Morris visited Shell Oil and Humble Oil (now Exxon Mobil) facilities in Texas to learn more about mass spectrometry, a technology the petroleum industry was using to test for hazardous air pollutants.

“The oil companies, because of their smog research, had developed unique expertise in detecting minute toxins in air quality,” Muffett said.

Of “particular interest” to Philip Morris, the company noted in a subsequent report about its visit, was Shell’s ongoing use of the technology to analyze cigarette tars. Ironically, Shell’s testing was conducted as part of New York University research funded by the tobacco industry.

Muffett said it is just one of many examples of the oil industry testing tobacco products. By the 1960s, the documents show, oil companies, including Shell and Esso, were developing and patenting their own cigarette filters ― a discovery Muffett said initially left him “utterly drop-jawed.”

By the late-1970s, according to CIEL, British American Tobacco alone shared board members with three separate petroleum companies.

Story continues below…

Beyond the research component, big oil and big tobacco shared a common market as well.

Among the more telling documents is a 1967 report in which the American Tobacco Company proposes a “tie-in” between its own Colony cigarettes and the petroleum industry.

“Success,” the tobacco company wrote, “will depend heavily on the appeal we make to the smoker-driver. And except to say the the appeal is not gasoline, we don’t intend to get into the creative requirements here. It is obvious that smoking pleasure and the freedom and leisure of auto travel must be linked successfully if we are to get this program moving.”

The report goes on to explore possible approaches, including establishing a relationship with the American Petroleum Institute, a trade association for America’s oil and natural gas industry, which the tobacco company described as “not an ordinary association” and “highly political.”

Muffett said this particular document highlights both the industries’ mutual interests (including the fact that gas stations have long been key retail outlets for tobacco products) and that big tobacco was constantly looking to oil companies, and API, for guidance.

API and Philip Morris did not respond to HuffPost’s requests for comment Tuesday.

Big tobacco’s fascination with big oil “bordered on paranoia,” Muffett said. And the relationship was, as he put it, not all “lovey dovey.”

Reports and internal documents, CIEL says on a website about the research, “demonstrate that each industry saw in the other a convenient culprit for environmental cancers. Ironically, this mutual finger-pointing not only gave each industry a convenient opportunity to watch and learn from the other’s strategies, it also increased the overall public uncertainty about the causes of cancer and the necessary solutions to the benefit of both industries.”

Muffett told HuffPost the documents compiled by his nonprofit effectively become a precursor to the story in Merchants of Doubt, a book that details how “a loose-knit group of high-level scientists, with extensive political connections, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public” about the dangers of tobacco smoke and global warming.

Muffett’s hope is that others will investigate the documents for themselves.

“A core part of the lesson here is that this information is out there, the truth is out there,” he told HuffPost. “And far less of it is under industry control than I think they may have long believed.”

May Boeve, co-founder and executive director of environmental group 350.org, pointed out that the “last 14 consecutive months have been the hottest on record.”

“We will make sure that Exxon and their industry peers are held accountable for robbing us of a generation’s worth of action on climate,” she added.

Other key findings, as highlighted on CIEL’s website and in a press release, include:

  • After learning that Shell was using the Stanford Research Institute for animal experimentation, a Phillip Morris executive wrote that the company should consider hiring SRI for its own research, arguing, “Obviously [Shell] would not employ them if they did not think SRI was reliable.” SRI was later hired by tobacco companies to conduct carbon monoxide testing and “develop discrete, portable cigarette testing kits that could be used without attracting attention.”

  • Theodore Sterling, who in 1968 “prepared a report that would prove central to the tobacco industry’s attacks on the emerging scientific consensus around cancer and tobacco,” also had a long history of conducting research for oil companies.

  • Many of the scientists who worked for the tobacco industry’s Scientific Advisory Board were recommended by a former Standard Oil executive.

  • Oil and tobacco companies teamed up to cosponsor America’s favorite past time: baseball.

In a statement Wednesday, Muffett said the new documents represent half the story ― at best.

“The rest of this story ― including vital truths about the history of climate deception ― remains hidden in the oil industry’s files,” he said. “Six decades of denial and deception is six too many. We owe it to ourselves, and to future generations, to bring that truth to light.”

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

Florida Zika Case Could Be First Local Transmission In U.S.

(Reuters) – Florida health officials said on Tuesday they are investigating a case of Zika virus infection that does not appear to have stemmed from travel to another region with an outbreak.

The statement from the Florida Department of Health did not specify whether the Zika case was believed to have been transmitted via mosquito bite, sexual contact or other means.

The department said the case was reported in Miami-Dade County and that it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an epidemiological study.

The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus.

“Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup … and distributed in the area under investigation,” the health department said in a statement. “Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of investigation.”

Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect and other neurological conditions, has spread rapidly through the Americas. A small number of cases of Zika transmitted between sexual partners have also been documented.

There has yet to be a case of local transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States, though more than 1,300 people in the country have reported infections after traveling to a Zika outbreak area.

U.S. officials have predicted local outbreaks to begin as the weather warms, particularly in southern states such as Florida and Texas.
